    PHP Institute has published 『やさしくておそろしい 法哲学講義--生命の価値はみな等しい(A Gentle yet Terrifying Lecture on Philosophy of Law: Is Every Life Equal in Value?)』 by Professor Takayuki Kawase of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at Chiba University, released on July 22, 2026.



    This book examines fundamental questions concerning our lives and society—such as the boundary between liberalism and paternalism, the value of life and health, and the nature of justice—from the perspective of legal philosophy. It also explores questions surrounding life and death, such as “Which is better: a short but fulfilling life or a long but modest one?” and “Why should we respect the dead?”, encouraging readers to reflect on what truly matters to them in life.

    The purpose of this project is to summarize the basic situation and trends of pilot projects in China, and from the perspective of suggestions from overseas experience, to take up Japan and the EU, to conduct comparative research on emissions trading schemes in China, Japan, and Europe from two perspectives: reduction effects and efficiency of trading markets, and to make policy recommendations toward the formation of healthier national schemes.

    This paper examines assumptions concerning the relationship between citizenship, justice, and well-being, based on representative political philosophies,including egoism, utilitarianism,libertarianism,liberalism,and communitarianism. A previous paper raised the possibility of an inter-disciplinary framework for collaboration between psychology and political philosophy. This study picks up that thread and attempts to actualize a collaborative research effort based on a framework grounded in positive political psychology.

Positive psychology investigates the good life scientifically. On the other hand, philosophy examines ideal ways of living and suggests ways to improve our society. Combining philosophical inquiries with contemporary science can assist us in exploring new ideas and practices related to personal and public well-being. This article seeks to accomplish this task by extending the recent developments of positive psychology.
