Prof. Justin Yifu Lin of Peking University came to Chiba University to deliver a lecture on his New Structural Economics on Saturday, 7 December (photos below).

The main conclusion of his lecture was as follows.

  • The mainstream economic theories in general are generated from the Western advanced countries and use one-sector in their models or treats the economic structure of advanced countries as the only structure.
  • For the first approach, there is no structural difference between developed and developing countries. Developed and developing countries only have quantitative differences.
  • For the second approach, the developing country's structural differences from those of developed countries are taken as distortions, such as industrial structure in structuralism and market structure in neoliberalism.
  • There are structural differences between developed and developing countries and the differences are endogenous to the differences in their endowments.
  • The new structural economics offers new theoretical and policy insights not only in development and transition but in every field of modern economics.
  • The New Structural Economics is a gold mine for theoretical and empirical research and offers the opportunity for economists to do well while do goods.

In collaboration with Peking University, Chiba University will continue to study New Structural Economics further and publish the Japanese translation of Prof. Lin's related books.
